Anti-gun Colorado State Senator Evie Hudak has decided to resign from office rather than face a possible recall election. She would be the third lawmaker to face a recall effort this year over gun control measures. Her colleagues, John Morse and Angela Giron, were removed from office last September.
She won re-election to her seat in 2012 by fewer than 600 votes. It’s almost a forgone conclusion that if a recall election were held, she wouldn’t have survived.
In a statement, Sen. Hudak noted, ”by resigning I am protecting these important new laws for the good of Colorado and ensuring that we can continue looking forward.” Now, Colorado Democrats have to find someone to fill her vacancy.
Hudak is probably best known for her condescending exchange with Amanda Collins, a former college student who was sexually assaulted, who was testifying in favor of allowing students carry concealed firearms on campus last March. She said:
“[S]tatistics are not on your side.”
Collins was raped at gun point in a gun free zone in 2007 while walking to her car at the University of Nevada-Reno. Due the University’s no weapons policy, Collins was in possession of her concealed carry permit at the time of the attack, but not her firearm. Her assailant went on to rape two more women and killed one of them, Brianna Denison, who was just 20-years-old.
Well, that’s just classy. Here’s the clip of the exchange below.
Collins responded by appropriately saying, “you weren’t there.”
Additionally, she flippantly told a colleague to flip a coin to determine whether to vote in favor or against a proposed $1 billion dollar tax increase to finance education in the state. Oh, and that proposed tax increase was rejected earlier this month. Goodbye, Senator Hudak – and good riddance.
